Towards Thriving: Celebrating One Year at Saddlers Shopping Centre

When people walk into Lucy's Pantry today, they see a beautiful space in the heart of Walsall. They see shelves stocked with affordable food, friendly volunteers, conversations happening over a cup of tea, and a community hub emerging.
What many don't see is the journey it took to get here.
As we celebrate one year at Saddlers Shopping Centre, we're not celebrating the first year of Lucy's Pantry. We're celebrating a significant milestone in a much longer journey— one that has been shaped by determination, resilience and an unwavering belief that everyone deserves access to affordable food, practical support and a community where they belong.
Where It All Began
Lucy's Pantry was created with a simple vision: to tackle food insecurity differently.
We believed people deserved to be able to access good food affordably. They deserved choice, dignity and the opportunity to shop in a welcoming environment without judgement. We also recognised that food insecurity rarely exists in isolation. Financial hardship, loneliness, poor wellbeing and social isolation are often interconnected, meaning people need more than just food to thrive truly.
From the beginning, our ambition was to create a community hub where affordable food would sit alongside volunteering, wellbeing, learning and opportunities for people to rebuild confidence and strengthen their lives.
But like many grassroots organisations, turning that vision into reality wasn't straightforward.
The Early Years
Before moving into Saddlers Shopping Centre, Lucy's Pantry operated from several different locations.
Every move brought new challenges. We had to adapt to limited storage, changing opening hours, and spaces not designed for the service we wanted to provide. Instead of focusing solely on growing the project, much of our time was spent overcoming practical barriers simply to keep the pantry running.
At the same time, we faced the ongoing challenge familiar to so many charitable organisations: funding.
Keeping services running often means balancing increasing demand with limited resources. There have been moments where the future felt uncertain, but thanks to the commitment of our volunteers, partners, funders and supporters, Lucy's Pantry has continued to grow.
These experiences continue to shape who we are today. They've made us resilient, creative, and taught us the importance of working together.
A New Chapter
In August 2025, Lucy's Pantry moved into Saddlers Shopping Centre.
For the first time, we had consistent access to a highly visible town centre location where members knew they could find us. While this isn't yet our permanent home, having a stable base over the past twelve months has transformed what we've been able to achieve.
We're delighted that this arrangement has now been extended for a further year, allowing us to continue building on everything we've achieved while we work towards our long-term ambition of securing a permanent community hub for Walsall.
A Year of Growth and Impact
Having a consistent base has allowed Lucy's Pantry to evolve past just a community grocery shop and move towards becoming a community hub.
Over the past year, we have:
Helped hundreds of local households reduce the cost of their weekly shopping by providing access to affordable food.
Redistributed surplus food, ensuring good-quality food reached local families instead of going to waste.
Welcomed and supported a growing team of volunteers who contribute thousands of hours each year to help keep the pantry running.
Created opportunities for people to gain confidence, develop skills and build experience through volunteering.
Strengthened partnerships with charities, housing providers, businesses, health services and community organisations across Walsall.
Supported people beyond food by providing signposting, practical advice and connections to wider services.
Developed Lucy's Pantry as a welcoming community space where people can meet others, reduce isolation and feel part of something positive.
The biggest impact, however, can't be measured by numbers alone.
We've seen members become volunteers.
Volunteers move into employment.
People who once walked through our doors feeling isolated now greet others by name.
We've watched friendships form, confidence grow, and people rediscover a sense of purpose.
That is the impact we're most proud of.

Expanding Our Community Offer
Developed Lucy's Pantry into more than a community grocery by growing volunteering opportunities, community activities and wider support services.
Looking Beyond Food
Continued developing initiatives that tackle the wider causes of hardship, strengthen partnerships and create opportunities for people to thrive.
Looking Ahead
Secured another 12 months at Saddlers Shopping Centre while continuing to work towards our long-term vision of establishing a permanent community hub for Walsall.
None of This Happens Alone
Lucy's Pantry exists because of the incredible people who believe in our vision.
Our volunteers give their time, energy and compassion every single week.
Our partners work alongside us to provide joined-up support.
Our funders invest in our ambition to build stronger communities.
Our members' needs remind us every day why this work matters.
Together, we've created something far greater than a community grocery.
We've created a place where people feel welcome.
Where they build friendships.
Where they gain confidence.
Where they know someone cares.
The Journey Continues
As we celebrate this milestone, we're not just reflecting on the past — we're looking ahead with excitement and purpose.
The next twelve months mark the beginning of an ambitious new chapter for Lucy's Pantry with the launch of our Feed More for Less campaign.
Feed More for Less is built on a simple belief: no one should struggle to afford food while perfectly good food goes to waste.
Over the coming year, we'll be expanding the reach of our Good Food for Less surplus food programme by working with community organisations across Walsall to create a network of local distribution hubs. Rather than asking people to travel into the town centre, trusted community spaces will become collection points, making affordable surplus food available closer to where people live.
This approach allows us to reach more households, strengthen local organisations and create a network of community partners working together to tackle food insecurity. By sharing resources, knowledge and a common purpose, we can build a stronger and more connected support system across the borough.
Creating Impact Beyond Food
Feed More for Less isn't simply about distributing surplus food.
It's about creating a movement that brings together communities, businesses, volunteers and local organisations to address some of the biggest challenges facing our borough.
The campaign will help:
Increase access to affordable food for more households across Walsall.
Strengthen partnerships with community organisations and local venues.
Reduce food waste by ensuring surplus food reaches people instead of landfill.
Support local community spaces by creating new opportunities for collaboration and engagement.
Encourage volunteering and community participation.
Build a more resilient, connected and compassionate network of support.
Championing Climate Justice
The year ahead will also see climate justice become an even greater focus of our work.
Food insecurity and environmental sustainability are often seen as separate issues, but we know they are closely connected. Every item of good food rescued from waste represents both a financial saving for local families and a positive step towards reducing unnecessary environmental impact.
Through Feed More for Less, we're committed to demonstrating how communities can tackle both challenges at the same time — reducing waste, supporting households, and making better use of the resources that already exist.
For us, climate justice means creating a food system where good food is valued, waste is minimised, and everyone has fair access to nutritious, affordable food.
Working Towards Something Bigger
While we're incredibly grateful to have secured another twelve months at Saddlers Shopping Centre, our journey doesn't end here.
This space has given us the stability to grow, strengthen partnerships and demonstrate what Lucy's Pantry can achieve. It has become the foundation from which we can expand our reach and deepen our impact.
At the same time, we remain committed to our longer-term ambition of creating a permanent community hub for Lucy's Pantry.
The progress we've made over the last year has shown what is possible when we have a consistent base from which to operate.
